Kaiser Permanente Partners with Montgomery County, Maryland Public Schools (MCPS) on Mental Health and Well-being
On October 21st MCPS, in partnership with Kaiser Permanente, held its Survival Kit for Virtual Education Webinar for over 150 teachers and staff. The half-day professional development training was developed in partnership with MCPS and Kaiser Permanente and featured a variety of education and self-care resources including a keynote from MCPS’s Mindfulness Coordinator, an educator panel Q & A for practical mindfulness in the classroom, and breakout sessions on resilience and stress reduction techniques. One of the highlights of the program was the truncated version of our RISE UP virtual workshop, an online workshop designed to explore the prevalence and potential impact of trauma and stress on student behavior and offer strategies to help educators and other school staff navigate challenging interactions. Teaching Artists from Kaiser Permanente facilitate the 75-minute session, employing theatre, experiential learning and arts integration techniques to engage participants in their own discovery and practical implementation. The program was such a success, the audience asked that we bring it back again. Recordings of the program will be available soon. Kaiser Permanente also participated in MCPS’s mental health awareness week from October 26-31, introducing Kaiser Permanente’s RISE UP workshop and featuring Damion Perkins, who develops and implements community health educational programming, using arts-integrated approaches to improve wellbeing and academic outcomes.
