The Kaiser Permanente Community Health Access Program (CHAP) provides free to low-cost health care coverage to low-income and uninsured individuals or families throughout Northern Virginia and Maryland. In 2020, the program was improved to better serve eligible community members. Most notably, we strengthened our partnerships with health care safety net clinics and social service providers in Maryland and Northern Virginia, to more seamlessly offer CHAP to more people who lack access to care. These organizations are now better able to incorporate the CHAP eligibility screening and enrollment steps into their clinic workflows during CHAP open enrollment, November 1 to December 15. We are proud to work with our newest health care safety net partner, Culmore Clinic, to offer coverage to residents in the Bailey’s Crossroads and Culmore neighborhoods of Fairfax County, where a KP-sponsored assessment determined that at least 80% of residents lack health care. This is the site of a Kaiser Permanente place-based initiative, where we are making a range of investments in the health and wellbeing of Northern Virginians. In the face of unprecedented challenges stemming from COVID-19, the health care safety net has transformed in many ways to meet the needs of their patients, including leveraging telehealth. To support our partners in their telehealth journey, Kaiser Permanente is launching a Virtual Care Initiative, and will invest $163,000 in the Mid-Atlantic Region to provide technical assistance and support peer learning, sharing of best practices, and telehealth reimbursement advocacy. Virtual care Requests for Applications (RFAs) were released to Federally Qualified Health Centers in Washington, DC and Northern Virginia in late October, and the program will officially launch in January 2021.
